No matter how many flowcharts and five year plans you make, you will never be able to plan uncertainty.
It’s a staple in life really, that nervous flutter in your stomach serving as a reminder that things will most likely not go as planned. It doesn’t matter how many hours of sleep you loose in overthinking or how strong the safety nets you build are, life does what life wants and sometimes that means throwing you for a loop.
Uncertainty can feel a lot like trying to climb an impeccably smooth wall, your fingers will simply slip off at any attempt to find something solid to hold on to.
It’s very intimidating, this wall of uncertainty. The way it looms overhead, shrinking you in size and blocking your vision from seeing anything beyond it. Try as you might, you can’t knock it down and you certainly can’t ignore it.
So, that leaves you with the unsettled question:
What in the world are you going to do about this gigantic wall standing in your way?
One option is the classic Spiderman solution, but I’ve heard they’ve recently listed radioactive spiders as endangered species so this option might not be the easiest to get your hands on. Another option is to use it as a backrest, spending your life pretending not to notice the pressure as it pushes against you, serving as a constant reminder that you are attempting to ignore the unignorable.
Or you can face it head on.
Buy yourself some spray paint, call on your inner Bansky, and use that giant wall as a brilliant blank canvas just begging for some epic graffiti to bring it to life. You don’t have the power to remove the wall, but you do have the power to create a beautiful masterpiece out of it.
Embracing uncertainty works much in the same way. You have no control over the presence of it in your life, but you have complete control over what you choose to make of it.
So why not challenge yourself to make something spectacular?
Ok metaphors that probably warrant some psychoanalysis aside, what does embracing uncertainty in your life actually mean?
It means you have the freedom to follow those crazy dreams you have because you are not cemented into “the only way” of doing things in life. It means you have the liberation to follow those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities that come randomly flying across your path. It means you have found a way to release yourself from the fear that holds so many back from pursuing what they truly want to do in life.
Embracing uncertainty means crafting a life you love by taking risks worthy of the dreams you want to achieve.
Quick side note that deserves some emphasis - embracing uncertainty does not mean ditching all plans and life goals. In fact, it means quite the opposite.
You should dream, and dream big. You should plan, and plan to reach great heights.
World domination doesn’t happen overnight you know.
But with all this dreaming and planning, don’t forget to leave some room for the uncertainty, because even dreams can be restrictive if you never allow yourself to look beyond them.
So dream and plan and never give up on your goals, but don’t tether yourself to the proven ways of achieving them.
Embrace uncertainty with arms wide open, knowing full well that in this uncertainty you have the possibility to take the risks that will get you far beyond your wildest dreams.
