One of my favorite feelings in the world is takeoff.
As frightening as the concept is, hurtling down a stretch of pavement in a metal tube only to go completely airborne at the end of it with 300+ of my closest friends has become borderline addictive for me. There’s just something about the rush of total freedom as the wheels take leave of the ground combined with the buzz of excitement stirring in my gut that has me coming back again and again.
This time I’m back for what is sure to be one of the more important takeoffs in my life. The whole one-way ticket to Roma adds a lot of weight and excitement, plus a little bit of nerves, to this takeoff. So, I decided that since this is a pretty momentous step in life, I should probably have some theme music to accompany it. Queue the birth of my Takeoff Playlist, the perfect combination of songs to start off my grand adventure with.
Here’s a few of my favorites off the list and their theme music credentials:
Step Out - Jose Gonzalez
I live in constant threat of the travel itch. It often strikes at the most inconvenient times, for instance 1AM seems to be a favorite haunt for it. When this happens, there’s not much I can do besides thumb through my old travel photography and turn on one of my favorite movies, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. The first song on my Takeoff Playlist comes from this movie, specifically (you guessed it) the takeoff scene. The chanted chorus backed by the building drums echoes that stirring feeling of excitement deep in my gut, so naturally this song was an easy pick to start off my playlist.
Not a One - The Young Wild
Back in January I had a good friend ask me what song I would pick to describe the hope I held for 2017, and this was the song I chose. This song is packed with energy, but it’s the lyrics that really earned it a spot on my playlist. With an undertone of defiance, the lyrics convey this idea that the unknown is really a grand adventure and nothing, not even fear, will hold me back from pursuing it. This is the kind of song I can’t help but sing at the top of my lungs, sorry to my seat mates in advance.
Places- The National Parks
This is a tip of the hat to the musical genius that introduced me to this song, accurately describing it as my anthem for this next step in life. He described the chugging beat as the perfect representation of a traveler’s feet pounding away on their path, and I couldn’t agree more. The song incapsulates the importance of places to a traveler, and helps explain why we so often feel the need to hit the road. One of my favorite lines in the song talks about how all the different places I visit and the people I meet are a part of me, imprinting on me wherever I go. Found towards the end of my playlist, this song serves as a reminder of why I’m pursuing this life on the road in the first place.
We Don’t Know - The Strumbellas
And to wrap it all up, a song to capture the hopeful truth that drives this dream. Honestly, I really have no idea where this next step in life is going to take me. I don’t know where I’ll be a year from now, let alone a month from now. I am standing on the edge of one of the most uncertain times in my life to date. But I’m facing this uncertainty head on, because the one thing I do know is that it’ll all work out in the end. Between the love and support of my family and friends and my stubborn strength and will, I’ll be just fine.
